Todays blog is all about Maternity shoots, what to wear for yours, what typical poses to do and lots of advice to get you up to speed before booking with Enfys Photography. A Maternity shoot can be one of the great experiences of becoming a parent, be that single or partnership I always suggest to friends and family that this isn’t something you want to miss out, especially if its your first born but of course with every shoot that Enfys does planning does take place.
What do I wear to my Maternity Shoot?
I normally advise my clients to bring anything you feel comfortable in and love wearing. Form fitted maxi dresses are wonderful for those look how big my bump shots, or a loose fitting dress thats fitted at the top can be just as perfect. Jeans (any dark color), Shirts – big, white, button-down rumpled man’s shirt, vest tops, these can be fitted or stretchy in solid colors (white, black, red, blue). Classic, small and tasteful pieces studs make sense and are totally appropriate jewellery wise.
What shouldn’t I wear?
Avoid patterns, stripes and plaids unless they are part of your identity. Try not to wear anything before or during the shoot that might leave marks on your skin, this can cause discomfit. Jewellery & watches, unless there’s a really good story behind the piece. Of course engagement and wedding rings are an exception.
Can I bring fabrics? To make a photograph different.
Yes! Consider fabrics that are exceptionally sheer or have a little bit of sheen, colours that perhaps match the gender of your baby are perfect. We do have plenty of fabrics in the studio for you to choose from however if you want fabric but don’t have any.
What should my partner wear?
For men I advise them to bring jeans or khaki pants or any other dark bottoms. Soft (not starched), plain white shirts cotton and linen are both wonderful choices and will suit you. Bring solid, dark colors like black, dark brown, navy blue and charcoal gray tops and bottoms. If you want your partner to match you in an outfit, try to stick to the same colour pallet not the same colour.
What else should I bring to my shoot?
A scan photograph is a wonderful addition to any maternity shoot, you can also bring a pair of baby booties or a certain t-shirt thats important to you (the first one you bought). Small props, stuffed animals, building blocks, flowers anything you feel that’ll bring some personality into the shoot.
How should I prepare before the shoot?
Try and get plenty of sleep the night before, relax and don’t stress to much. This is for your enjoyment. Get your nails done, perhaps your hair to. Plan your makeup, unless you’ve booked with our in house make up artist. Try not to wear fake tan or top yours up please, leave at least seven days before to do that.
When is the best time to book?
Usually 30-36 weeks into your pregnancy is the best time to book, at this point your bump is the right size but even if its not don’t let that discourage you in booking. Six to ten weeks before your due date, however scheduling depends on how your pregnancy is coming along. Schedule any time within that window or even closer to your due date. It all depends on how you’re feeling and if you like your shape.
Remember, my job as your photographer is to help you when you need it. To advise you on preparing for and during your shoot and of course to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. Don’t feel discouraged or scared to ask me anything! I am always happy to help. I hope to see you at your Maternity Shoot and hope you’ll love it as much as I’ll love photographing you!
